A Petition for our Friends the Chimps

As EAL, we are focused on fighting elephant exploitation and wildlife crime, and we support several field projects and organizations dealing with those issues.

But we think it’s important to campaign also for Apes and Cetaceans, whom with Elephants form what we call the “Fantastic 3”, the top three intelligences on Earth (a part from us…).
Educating people on the uniqueness of these “three beautiful minds” is an ethically duty.
So now it’s time to help Jane Goodall and voice your opinion on the future of captive chimpanzees in the United States.

Please fill in the petition at this link:http://www.janegoodall.org/USFWS-petition

The United States has long recognized wild chimpanzees as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) but has not provided the same level of protection for chimpanzees held captive in this country, like those exploited in commercials and movies or kept as pets or in the labs.

After reviewing the status of chimpanzees, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) determined that all members of a species must be afforded the same protection and that the split listing of chimpanzees must therefore be eliminated.
In addition, finding that the threats to chimpanzees have increased since its last status review, the USFWS proposed that all chimpanzees, whether captive or wild, be listed as endangered.
If finalized, the rule would bring into play the strict permitting requirements of the ESA
