Four adult elephants have been killed by a speeding passenger train in eastern India.
“The train knocked down the elephants due to negligence of the driver,” Forest Minister Hiten Barman told AFP news agency.
“Train accidents of this sort have of late become a concern in the northern districts of West Bengal,” Mr Barman said, adding that according to official figures at least 42 elephants had been killed in the West bengal state only since 2004.
At country level the numbers are much higher, not to mention the elephants who get electrocuted by power lines.
Space is really running out for our gentle giant friends in Asia, surrounded by an ocean of careless people.
