The government of Kenya has stated that so far this year, 74 elephants have been killed by poachers. Probably much more, they just haven’t find them.
According to official statistics, 289 elephants were killed in 2011 and 384 in 2012.

In a statement to the newsroom, Government spokesman Muthui Kariuki said the Kenya Wildlife Service will deploy 1,000 more officers to scale up efforts to salvage the remaining elephants in Kenya.
Muthui added that the additional officers would also be equipped with cutting edge training and equipment to facilitate the security operations.

Conservationists view lenient penalties by the Courts as major setbacks in the fight against poaching.
The government spokesman expressed hope that the 11th Parliament would give priority to a new wildlife policy also aimed at fighting poaching.
